I’m blessed to have two sisters in my life. One from the same mother, and one from a different one. Shelby initially started out as one of my sister’s friends and has become a staple in both of our lives for many years. Like my other big sister, Mary Grace, she’s been there watching me grow and supporting me throughout my life.
Growing up she would be at my house constantly, for sleepovers and what-have-you. Through middle school and high school she would always tease me in the halls and make an a point to say hi to me. Which I once found annoying, looking back now, is very sweet and loving.
One of the best things about Shelby, though, is her comedic timing. She’s probably one of the funniest people I know—even when it’s unintentional, she’s funny. I remember one time I was Turning Point with Shelby and Mary. We had finished our food, and I had literal crumbs on my plate. Shelby asked (because, like me she has a huge appetite), “Are you going to finish that?” Puzzled, I asked her, “The crumbs?” She laughed, and then ate the crumbs. It still gets me to this day. She’s just a such a jovial individual.
Whenever we see each other it feels like a nice family reunion. And when she comes to Jersey, I get to spend time with three of my favorite girls. My fiancée, my sister, and my other sister. There’s plenty of cackling, reminiscing and deep conversation. It’s true bonding. I couldn’t imagine a world where I didn’t have Shelby as an integral part of my life. She brings so much joy and laughter, and that is truly priceless.
Shelby, we’ve had the pleasure of knowing each other for over twenty years. You’ve been a sister to me for many of those years and I couldn’t thank you enough. It’s an honor having you in my life, and a true gift watching you eat the crumbs off my plate.
