For those who go to the gym there are always standouts. Maybe there’s the person that screams after every lift, the person that wears goofy clothes or how about the person that just comes to the gym for a social gathering? And then there’s these two, Mike and John. 

For those who don’t know them, they are the mayors of LA Fitness but more importantly they are Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets. They’re always lurking around the gym heckling and joking from afar. They make people smile but also motivate them at the same time. It’s a true gift that should not go unrecognized. They’re often seen as a unit, but each one given their own spice to the gym. 

Let’s start with Mike, Captain Ballbuster. Mike cannot go a minute without being serious. It’s part of his charm. He’s always looking to make people laugh and most importantly make the dim gym a tad bit brighter. But it’s not just his goofy demeanor that makes him a great gym enthusiast. He is a motivator. I’ve had the pleasure of working out with him countless times and he will always make me go for that last rep. His motto, ”I’m only getting it if it’s coming down.” Mike is also into changing up peoples’ routines as well. As a former bodybuilder, he’s seen the tricks of the trade and likes to bestow on us kids. A true gym champion.

John, on the other hand, is the quieter of the two. But in my opinion, a true conversationalist. I’ve had some great talks with John about life and as an older gentleman, he’s given wisdom far beyond my years. One of the highlights at my most recent tenor of my job was getting to talk to him before work. John put things in perspective for me while busting my balls, in typical Statler and Waldorf fashion. He too has a motto that has always stuck with me, “We’re here for you.” Not just a great gym-goer but a great friend.

Mike and John are two of the most wholesome gym goers that quite frankly I’ve ever met. They deserve their own spinoff with the Muppets. These two are the gym archetypes you want. And luckily for me, they’re only two of a kind.
